The Assessor will be responsible for determining the established value of all real property within the town/village of Canton for taxation purposes therefore the candidate must posess: good inter-personal skills, exhibit integrity and sound judgement. The Assessor must possess the knowledge to assist in appraising all types of real property and the theories, principles and practices of real property valuation and assessment. |
| Certification Needed |
Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and six (6) months of satisfactory full-time paid experience in an occupation involving the valuation of property, such as assessor, appraiser, valuation data manager, real property appraisal aide or the like. Such experience shall be deemed satisfactory if it is demonstrated that the experience gained was primarily in the performance of one or more of the following tasks: collection and recording of property inventory, preparation of comparable sales analysis reports, preparation of signed valuation or appraisal estimates or reports using cost, income, or market data approaches to value. It shall be the responsibility of the appointee to provide detailed and verified documentation of such experience, including work schedules and samples of finished products. |
| Brief Job Description |
The Assessor will be responsible for determining the established value of all real property within the town/village of Canton for taxation purposes. The Assessor will also be required to maintain the 100% equilization rate as established by the 2026 town wide re-valuation as well as maintain the yearly cyclical reassessment schedule as required by the State of NY. assessment. Responsibilities include, but aren't limited to inspecting, classifying and valuing all classes of property, maintaing property records, proficient computer skills, and knowledge of existing law, rules, and regulations governing the evaluation of property for assessment purposes and exemptions. The Assessor is charged with with preparing, submitting and maintaining all reports of assessment activity as required. The work of the Assessor is performed under the supervision of the Town Supervisor and Board. This position requires a 35 hour work week. |
